Shambhala Art can be seen as a process, a product, and an arts education program.  As a process, it brings wakefulness and awareness to the creative and viewing processes through the integration of contemplation and meditation.  As a product, it is art that wakes people up. Shambhala Art is also an international non-profit arts education program based on the Dharma Art teachings of the late Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the founder of Shambhala Buddhism, Shambhala International, and Naropa Institute.  Shambhala Art is a division of Shambhala and is presided over by his son and heir, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. This program is taught by trained and authorized Shambhala Art teachers.

Coming to Your Senses: An Introduction to Shambhala Art

  • Chicago Shambhala Meditation Center 37 North Carpenter Street Chicago, IL, 60607 United States (map)

The Shambhala Art™ Program is a five part training in mindful creativity based on the teachings of Tibetan Buddhist meditation master, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, as found in his book, True Perception. He was also a calligrapher, photographer, poet, film maker and Ikebana master. His teachings centered on the integration of art and meditation as a way to cultivate greater awareness and genuine expressions that wake up both the artist and the viewer. His teachings were influential for such artists as Allen Ginsburg, Meredith Monk, Alice Walker, David Bowie, and Joni Mitchell.

Part 1: Coming to Your Senses explores the fertile ground of connecting to our sense perceptions and meditative mind for creative expression.  When we see things as they are and are open to our experience, an expression that is fresh and genuine naturally arises.

This one-day workshop will include meditation instruction, perception exercises, and discussion about the creative process that can be applicable to any art form and any level of experience in art or meditation.

Join us in exploring mindful sensory awareness and how it can enhance your creativity, meditation practice and daily life, whether you consider yourself an artist or not.

*Registration is required.

*For repeat participants, the fee is only $40.
